  • Tuition receipt โ€” first-year tuition paid in full to the DLI.
  • Education loan sanction letter from a scheduled Indian bank (fully accepted under SDS).
  • Savings / FD in the student's or immediate family sponsor's name (seasoned โ‰ฅ 6 months preferred).
  • Sponsor's ITR (3 years) and CA-attested net-worth certificate.

  • Medical exam in India by IRCC-approved panel physician: โ‚น5,500 โ€“ โ‚น7,500 (adult).

6. Spouse (Open Work Permit) โ€” 2025 Rules

Since 21 January 2025, IRCC has significantly tightened spouse open-work-permit (OWP) eligibility:

Student's ProgramSpouse OWP Eligible?
PhD / Doctoralโœ… Yes
Master's (16 months or longer)โœ… Yes
Master's (shorter than 16 months)โŒ No
Professional degrees (MD, DDS, LLB, BEng, BArch, DVM, OD, Pharm.D, BScN)โœ… Yes
Bachelor's / Undergraduate (general)โŒ No
College diploma / PG diplomaโŒ No
  • Spouse can apply together with the student, or later once the student's permit is issued.
  • OWP is full-time, any employer, valid for the length of the student's permit.
  • Spouses of ineligible programs may still visit on a visitor visa but cannot work.
  • A common-law relationship of 12 months is accepted; provide strong relationship proof.

7. Dependent Children

  • Dependent children (under 22, unmarried) can accompany you on a visitor record or study permit.
  • Minor children can attend Canadian public schools tuition-free in most provinces while a parent studies.
  • Provincial child healthcare typically covers dependants (may need private plan in ON/QC).
  • Add each dependant into your proof-of-funds calculation (see table above).

8. Student Work Rights

  • Off-campus: up to 24 hours per week during academic terms (raised from 20 in Nov 2024).
  • Full-time (40 hrs/week) allowed during scheduled academic breaks (winter, summer, reading week).
  • On-campus work: unlimited hours, no permit change needed.
  • Co-op work permit required for mandatory internships / co-op placements.

9. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) & PR

  • PGWP length matches program length: up to 3 years for programs โ‰ฅ 2 years.
  • From Nov 2024: PGWP for college graduates is tied to field-of-study lists aligned with labour shortages (healthcare, STEM, trades, agriculture, transport).
  • Bachelor's / Master's / PhD graduates from public universities are not field-restricted.
  • PR pathways: Express Entry โ€” Canadian Experience Class (after 1 year skilled Canadian work), Provincial Nominee Programs (Ontario OINP, BC PNP, Alberta AAIP, Manitoba MPNP, etc.).

10. Documents Checklist

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Canada still open for Indian students in 2026?

Yes. IRCC has capped total study-permit approvals (~437,000 for 2025) but Indian students remain the largest applicant group. Strong SDS profiles with a valid PAL are being processed normally.

Can I apply without IELTS?

Non-SDS applications may accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or CELPIP. SDS requires IELTS 6.0 (each band) or PTE 60 overall (minimum 60 in each โ€” accepted from Aug 2023).

What's the minimum bank balance shown besides GIC?

There is no official "minimum bank balance" beyond the CAD 22,895 proof-of-funds figure. Practically, we recommend showing an additional โ‚น8โ€“12 lakh of seasoned savings / FDs to demonstrate strong financial backing โ€” especially for non-SDS files.

Can my spouse come with me if I'm doing a 1-year PG Diploma?

Under current (Jan 2025) rules, no โ€” spouse OWP is not available for PG-diploma students. Spouse can only visit on a visitor visa without work rights.

How long does the SDS process take from Pathankot?

Typical timeline from Delhi VAC: 4โ€“8 weeks after biometrics for a complete SDS file. Non-SDS or files needing verification take 8โ€“16 weeks.
